The short answer
The best things to do alone in New York depend on what kind of night you want. To meet people, pick something with built-in structure, like a free group run, a no-partner dance class, an improv drop-in or a hosted dinner with strangers. To enjoy your own company, go to a museum late night, a jazz set at Smalls or a seat at the bar at Bemelmans. Free options include Whitney and Morgan Library Friday nights, the High Line and the Staten Island Ferry.
Things to do alone in New York City where you will meet people
These have a structure that does the introductions for you: a host, an instructor, a team or a shared task.
A free, volunteer-led 5K in neighborhood parks where the same regulars show up weekly, so a solo runner becomes a familiar face fast.
North Brooklyn Runners Wednesday Beginner Run
A short 2 to 3 mile weeknight loop built for newer runners, from a club that runs over 20 free group runs a week.
Swing Dance (Beginner) at 92NY
No partner needed: the class rotates partners all hour, so you dance with nearly everyone in the room by the end.
Improv games force you to play off strangers within minutes, and the 90-minute format needs no commitment or experience.
Nuyorican Bowery Slam at Bowery Poetry Club
The crowd scores the poets out loud, so even a quiet solo audience member ends up cheering and talking with neighbors.
Things to do alone in New York City that are better on your own
For a night when you want to be out, not necessarily social.
The Met Friday and Saturday evenings
The galleries thin out in the evening, so you can wander at your own pace and stay until closing.
Repertory and new indie screenings every night make a single seat in the dark an easy, unremarkable plan.
A small basement room where everyone faces the band, so sitting alone feels normal, and a late jam session follows the evening sets.
Live piano every night gives a solo drinker something to focus on, and the bar cover is cheaper than a table.

J.P. Morgan's three-story library is a calm, beautiful room to linger in alone, and Friday evenings cost nothing.
A free 25-minute harbor ride past the Statue of Liberty that works at any hour, including a sunset trip after work.
An elevated 1.5 mile walk with benches and city views, good for an unhurried solo evening stroll with no plan needed.

Tips for going out alone in New York City
- Sit at the bar or the counter. It is the easiest seat to take alone and the one where conversation starts most naturally.
- Choose things with a host, an instructor or a team. Structure does the introductions, so you do not have to.
- Arrive a few minutes early. Rooms are easier to join before they fill up.
- Go twice. The second visit is when people start to recognize you.
- Check the museum residency rules. Pay-what-you-wish and free Friday deals at The Met and MoMA apply to New York State residents.
