The short answer
The best things to do alone in Los Angeles include weeknight runs with Koreatown Run Club and Venice Run Club, bouldering at Touchstone Cliffs of Id, LA Conservancy walking tours, a revival screening at the New Beverly and a seat at the Musso and Frank bar. Free options include Griffith Observatory until 10 pm, the Getty on Saturday evenings and The Broad on Thursdays. To meet people over dinner, The Dinner Table Club hosts dinners for 10 to 20 strangers.
Things to do alone in Los Angeles where you will meet people
These have a structure that does the introductions for you: a host, an instructor, a team or a shared task.
Two weeknight runs with 3 or 5 mile options, and the Thursday route ends at a bar where people stay to talk.
The Wednesday run needs no sign-up, so you can show up alone near the Venice canals and fall in with a pace group.
Bouldering needs no partner, and people working the same problem tend to trade tips between attempts.
LA Conservancy Saturday Walking Tours
A small group follows a volunteer guide through downtown buildings, which makes it easy to chat with whoever is next to you.
Things to do alone in Los Angeles that are better on your own
For a night when you want to be out, not necessarily social.
Quentin Tarantino's repertory house runs 35mm double features, and a single seat at a revival screening never feels out of place.
A restored single-screen theater with a bar and a rental video store, good for browsing the shelves before a solo screening.
Musso & Frank Grill bar counter
Hollywood's oldest restaurant has a long counter where solo diners order a martini and watch red-jacketed bartenders work.
Friday hours run to 8pm, and wandering the galleries alone lets you set your own pace past Urban Light at dusk.
Two floors of used books, including a tunnel made of stacked volumes, reward an unhurried hour on your own.
Free things to do alone in Los Angeles
Open until 10pm most nights, so you can catch sunset over the basin and then look through the public telescopes.
Saturday hours stretch to 9pm and parking turns free after 6pm, which makes a solo evening among the gardens cheap.
Thursday stays open until 8pm, a good after-work window to see the contemporary collection without weekend lines.
A compact, free museum on the UCLA edge of Westwood where you can see a show and sit in the courtyard in under two hours.
Santa Monica Downtown Farmers Market
The Wednesday market is where many LA chefs shop, and walking it with a coffee is a calm midweek morning alone.

Tips for going out alone in Los Angeles
- Sit at the bar or the counter. It is the easiest seat to take alone and the one where conversation starts most naturally.
- Choose things with a host, an instructor or a team. Structure does the introductions, so you do not have to.
- Arrive a few minutes early. Rooms are easier to join before they fill up.
- Go twice. The second visit is when people start to recognize you.
- Stay on your side of town. In LA, the plan you keep is the one within a short drive.
